FOUNDATION

Richard Tatara, Foundation Chair asks that each of us make a donation to the Rotary Foundation as part of the Every Rotarian Every Year campaign.  You can donate to the Foundation at MY ROTARY . Or you can write a check to Rotary Club of Naperville and designate FOUNDATION in the memo line. Thank you for your support!

Foundation Minute for the Week

It takes more than installing sanitation facilities for a water and sanitation project to succeed in the long term.  It’s also important to cultivate healthy habits.  Good hygiene practices can reduce diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and pneumonia by nearly 50%. Washing hands with soap can save lives.

The Rotary Club of Box Hill Central, Victoria Australia, facilitates Operation Toilets, a program that builds toilets and delivers sanitation education to schools in developing countries including India and Ethiopia.  The group constructs separate facilities for boys and girls to ensure privacy, and Rotary members teach students how to wash their hands with soap. Workers in each school are instructed in how to maintain the facilities.

In the Philippines, the Rotary Club of Puchong Centennial Malaysia sponsored several speakers to instruct students about oral hygiene, hand washing and the importance of frequent bathing.  After each presentation, students were given kits that included toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, combs and other toiletries.

And in the United States, members from the Rotary Club of Ithaca in Ithaca, New York, visit schools within their district to instruct youngsters about the importance of handwashing and how to effectively wash their hands.

Your contribution to The Rotary Foundation enables this to happen.  Giving to the Foundation is much easier – just go to rotary.org/donate

Thank you.

DISTRICT 6450
District Conference April 12-14
Club members Pat Merryweather, Randy Ems, Rachel Ossyra, Alma Jones, Brian O’Malley, Barry McKeown, Hunter Byington and Chuck Newman attended the annual District 6450 Conference at the historic Union League Club in Chicago last weekend and had a great time networking with Rotarians from around the District. There were outstanding panel discussions on women in Rotary and on increasing economic development in underprivileged communities in Chicago.
Our members led 3 of the breakout panel discussions on the impact Rotary is having locally and globally: Barry (initiatives of the Rotary Action Group for Diabetes), Chuck (Simple Schools Global Grants pilot program), Rachel (impact of the Peace in Action Grants from the Foundation). And we picked up some District awards.
Randy received a District Award recognizing us as one of the top per capita giving clubs to Rotary Foundation.
Pat received a District Governor’s Award for her extensive service as Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator.
Rachel received a District Award for her service as District Grants Committee Chair.
Many of the Rotary International Directors who were in Chicago for the Council on Legislation this week attended the Saturday night dinner (which featured keynote speaker past RI President K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran) and hosted tables that were open to any attendees.
2019 District Award Randy Ems 2019 District Award Rachel Ossyra 2019 District Governor Award Pat Merryweather Arges
Mark your calendars for next year’s District Conference will be April 24-26 at the Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
The Council on Legislation has decided that going forward Rotaract Clubs will be elevated, allowing them to join RI, the same as Rotary Clubs do, rather than being a “program.” They will retain their uniqueness, but will received increased support from RI and the new status will enhance their ability to serve. Hopefully that will have a positive effect on our 2 Rotaract Clubs, at North Central College and Benedictine University, and help them become more firmly established.
