Club News

Enjoy the Fourth of July Holiday! - During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia.  After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author.  Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. One of the most enduring myths about Independence Day is that Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  Most delegates actually signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776. The myth had become so firmly established that, decades after the event and nearing the end of their lives, even the elderly Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had come to believe that they and the other delegates had signed the Declaration on the fourth. In a remarkable series of coincidences, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two founding fathers of the United States and the only two men who signed the Declaration of Independence to become president, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the United States' 50th anniversary

Club Information

October 18 – The Rotary Club of Naperville will hold the second annual Soup’s On! fundraiser at Tellabs in Naperville.  This is a great family event that was enjoyed immensely by everyone who attended the inaugural Soups On! held last October.  Bill and Karen Garlough are chairing the 2009 Soups On! committee, President-Elect Pat Merryweather is the Manpower Chair, and Frank Slocumb is chairing the Sponsorship Committee:  join them in helping put on another very successful event.

February 2010 – Chuck Newman will be organizing another humanitarian mission trip to Honduras in February, 2010.  Specific dates will be announced.  If you are interested in participating in this life changing, worthwhile effort, talk to Chuck.

Board Meetings - The Rotary Club of Naperville Board meetings are held from 7:00 - 8:30 am at the downtown Naperville Chamber of Commerce's conference room B located on the third floor of the Promenade Building on Van Buren and Main in Naperville.  Meetings from March through June, 2009, will be held on the third Tuesday of the month.

Scott Mitchell is chairing the Foundation Committee for our club.  The Foundation Committee encourages every member to become either a Paul Harris Sustaining Member or a member of the Every Rotarian Every Year Club. You are encouraged to join Club members who have already become Paul Harris Society members with the intention of donating $1,000 annually to the Paul Harris Foundation.  Your donation can be a cash donation or, alternatively, a gift of stock.  In the latter case, you can deduct the appreciated value of the stock while preparing your income taxes, avoiding any capital gains taxes on the stock.  If $1,000 does not fit into your annual charity budget, consider joining the Every Rotarian Every Year Club by becoming a $100 per year Paul Harris sustaining member.  Remember, gifts to the Paul Harris Foundation are a very efficient way to make charitable contributions.  Every dollar you contribute will directly benefit a needy person or cause. Club Administrator, Erin O’Donnell, has forms for the Paul Harris Society program that can be filled out and returned to Erin.  Let Erin know if you plan to join the Every Rotarian Every Year initiative by having $50 added to your dues semi-annually.

Website Update
Thursday, June 25, 2009 by Sun Kwok

I have made an update to the website to make it a bit more streamlined. You can no longer scroll within an article displayed on the website, but you can still click on the title of the article to see the full article. The colors behind the title have been faded a bit too, to make the site a bit less... intense. I've also made that blue bar a bit longer so that two or three line subject lines are more visible.

Naperville Rotary Donates Ambulance / Video Update
Thursday, May 07, 2009 by Sun Kwok

Behind the scenes there are many members that work tirelessly to do good.

It is with the help of those that are aware of what is going on around them and those that can act when asked. To that end we have been able to donate

an ambulance to Hardin County, one of the poorest counties in Illinois, so poor that the simple requirement of emergency services take over 1.5 hours for an ambulance to arrive.

With the assistance of many Naperville Rotarians, a local business, not a Rotarian, we have been able to donate an equipped ambulance to these folks in need. I can not tell you how great this makes me feel and how proud I am of our Naperville Rotarians!

I thank those Rotarians, the Naperville Fire Department and the Naperville City Council.

In this video you see the initial presentation of the ambulance to 4 Sheriffs deputies from Hardin County at Naperville's Key Wester restaurant, for transport down to Hardin County.

District Awards Naperville Rotary Club
Thursday, May 07, 2009 by Bill Garlough

Today was a meeting with many pleasant surprises!  At last week-ends' District Conference,  DG Mike Slevnik handed out awards both Friday and Saturday nights.  I stayed until 10:30 Sunday morning and thought the only topic left was for incoming DG Jim Czerwionka to share his vision for next year.  I learned today that 5 minutes after I left the meeting room, DG Mike started to hand-out these Club awards.  Sorry I missed this!  Anyway, it lead to a fun meeting today.

I would like to personally congratulate all of our winners for outstanding Club service.  The successes kept on coming today, but I think I remember the awards in order.

1.  Best New Community Event for Soup's On! - A great team effort!

2.  Vocational Service, Second Place - Liz has turned our Interact/Vocational program into a club strength!

3.  PR, First Place - Hunter has secured the most media coverage ever for both our club and Rotary in general!

4.  Website, Third Place - Sun has worked tirelessly to improve our website, with great results!

5.  International Service, First Place - Chuck (and Pat) provide us with wonderful International programs and opportunities to serve abroad!

Let's see, 3 First Place finishes, 1 Second Place and 1 Third Place.  And to top it off, Pat Merryweather receives RI's prestigious Service Above Self Award.  In my book, our club is tops!

It has been my privilege to lead this club.  We have all done ourselves proud this Rotary year.  Congratulations again for this District recognition of our outstanding effort and great results.

Business to Business Lunch
Friday, May 01, 2009 by Sun Kwok

Sullivan's

Troy Smith (standing) hosted us for our B2B lunch. Everyone had a great time, with many folks not leaving until almost 2 pm! What a great fellowship experience!

Sullivan's

... a crowd of 18 Rotarians enjoying each other's company. The food was excellent! We ordered what we wanted from the lunch menu.

and @ RAFFI's

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

We had a small but great group of Rotarians meeting today for a B2B lunch at Raffi's.  Raffi and his family were consummate hosts providing us with a delicious lunch of asparagus soup or salad, sablefish, or chicken kebabs or lamb kebabs, with decadent profiteroles to top it off.  (Yes, you should be envious if you missed it!)

This is a wonderful way to enjoy a more intimate lunch with fellow Rotarians and visit their place of business.  Thanks to Raffi and all of the other Rotarians who hosted.  It was very enjoyable.

With thanks,

Charles P. McLimans

@ Newman Architecture:

I just wanted to let everyone know how inspiring our business lunch was last Thursday at Newman Architecture. We asked Chuck to tell us more about his work as co-founder of Schools for Children of the World. His stories about building or renovating schools in developing countries around the world were thought-provoking and incredible. We quickly realized once again how fortunate we are to live in this country and how blessed we all are.

We are also blessed to have a person like Chuck in our Rotary Club. He does so much for so many -- and he does it with humility, passion and grace.

Thanks, Chuck, for all you do for others. And thanks for a wonderful business lunch last Thursday.
